The Minnesota Museum of American Art was founded as an art school back in 1927. Over time, the acquisition of additional art pieces expanded the school's collection and, in 1969, the formally named Saint Paul Art Center was renamed the Minnesota Museum of Art. During the early 1980's the institution's focus shifted from educational programs to exhibitions and research, although education is still available. In 1992, the museum added the word "American" to its name to embrace the opportunity to represent the great diversity of American art and artists.
Admission to Minnesota Museum of American Art’s Collection Galleries is free.
